Residential buildings are structures that are designed for people to live in, typically in the form of apartments or houses. They can vary in size, from small single-family homes to large multi-unit buildings. They are typically found in urban, suburban and rural areas, and can be made of different materials such as brick, wood, concrete, and steel. Residential buildings can be designed in various design styles, from traditional to modern and can be intended for different types of occupants, such as single families, couples, or seniors.
An accessory dwelling unit (ADU) is a small, self-contained housing unit that is built on the same property as a single-family home. ADUs are also known as "granny flats," "in-law units," or "secondary units." They can be attached to the main house, such as a basement apartment or a converted garage, or they can be detached, such as a stand-alone cottage. The purpose of an ADU is to provide additional housing in areas where housing is in high demand, while also allowing homeowners to generate income by renting out the unit.
A Junior Accessory Dwelling Unit (JADU) is a smaller and less independent version of an ADU, usually less than 500 sq.ft, typically built inside the main house or attached to it, such as a converted garage or an addition to the main house, usually with shared entrance and facilities with the main house. They are also intended to provide additional housing, but with the added feature of being more affordable and easier to construct, and often used for family members or caregivers.
A residence addition refers to the process of expanding an existing single-family home by adding new living space. This can be done in various ways, such as building an additional floor, adding rooms to the side or back of the house, or constructing a separate structure on the property, such as a garage or guesthouse. The goal of a residence addition is to increase the size of the home to accommodate a growing family or to increase the value of the property. Residence additions are subject to local zoning and building regulations and require permits and inspections to ensure they comply with safety and structural standards.
